The delightful town of Zacharo, the largest
in the county of Ilia, is a unique region in the Peloponnese. The
stunning coast, the rich vegetation, the tranquil Lake Kaiafas and
the natural spas, and the glorious landscape all combine perfectly
to form a setting that brings peace, inspiration and admiration
to both the eyes and the heart.
Located 260km from the capital city of Athens via Tripoli and 320km
via Patra, Zacharo is the perfect holiday destination for
your travels to the Peloponnese.
Popular with visitors from both Greece and the rest of the world,
Zacharo should be your first choice destination in the Peloponnese. |
Zacharo is the perfect place in the Peloponnese
from which to venture out, and explore some of the famous sights
in the area. The town is
just 24km from Ancient Olympia - the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
Olympia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece,
and is one that is visited by tens of thousands of visitors each
year, who have come to see for themselves the site and ruins of
where the Olympic Games first began, and where the Olympic ideals
were born.
The site itself is one of immense interest, and visitors can explore
the ancient temples and ruins, as well as pay a visit to the museum
where one can see a wonderful selection of exhibits and findings
from the site.
Also close to Zacharo is the "Temple of Epicurean Apollon",
which is approximately 45km away. This stunning temple is one of
the best preserved ancient temples found anywhere in Greece. The
temple was built in 420 BC by the famous architect Iktinos, who
also built the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens.
Today, the temple is housed in a large tent-like structure, protecting
it from the elements of nature. This however, does not detract in
anyway the beauty and impressivness of the temple, which
is one the all visitors to the Peloponnese should visit.
One of the other popular destinations in Ilia and Zacharo is the
"Kaiafas Lake" region. Located approximately 5km from
Zacharo, the region of Kaiafas is one of extreme natural beauty
and tranquility.
The large pine forest offers scenery that charms the heart, and
the magical lake is one of the most picturesque sites in the area.
The natural spas here at the "Kaiafas Lake" are visited
by large numbers of people all year round, who come to bathe in
the spas which are filled with natural healing elements. The hydrotherapy
centre here is very popular, and provides well orgarnised facilities.
The Kaiafas Lake region itself is also a very beautiful place to
take a stroll, or to simply relax amongst the trees and nature.
The lake is also used as the training ground for the Greek water
skiing team.
One other area close to Zacharo that is full of gorgeous nature
is the famous Neda Gorge. The Neda river that forms the gorge passes
through stunning valleys, filled with trees and plants. There are
several water falls here that make a stunning setting, and which
are very popular with visitors.

For the wonderful summer months, Zacharo is home to one of the largest
beaches in the Peloponnese. The golden sandy beach stretches out
over 25km of coastline, and is ideal for relaxing at during the
summer months.
The town of Zacharo has everything one will need to enjoy their
holidays and travels. It is a town filled with beauty, interesting
places, and a very warm and friendly population.
There are many places for eating and dining, shopping, and other
interesting activities.
Many visitors who have stayed here in Zacharo have returned back
year after year, and many have told us that it is because Zacharo
truly is unique, and a home away from home for many of them.
We sincerely hope that your visit to Zacharo will not be too far
away, and we look forward to welcoming you here to the delightful
and beautiful place that we so proudly call home. |
